Manage network expansion

RAN networks are constantly evolving due to network densification, 4G deployment, network modernization, etc. As a result a lot of network elements are added or reconfigured, which at the end, directly impacts the quality of experience. The role of radio optimization engineers is to put those elements under surveillance (monitor their main KPIs) and perform radio sanity checks (detect missing neighbors, measure coverage & quality, identify code clashes and polluted areas,  detect crossed sectors, verify if CM configuration is aligned with expected values) in order to finally trigger optimization actions that will optimize their settings. Optimization teams are nowadays looking for solutions to automate those recurrent tasks.


Radio optimization teams need capabilities to measure the quality of experience of any user in any situation (static or mobile, indoor or outdoor). Traditional tools (drive tests, cell-based KPIs) are not adapted for that since they do not provide the means to

  • operate deep investigations to understand the impact of radio conditions on the customer experience
  • perform geolocated analysis at any moment in time on any area of the network
  • distinguish users in mobility situation or in indoor environment

Value-based optimization

By correlating high value subscribers and their frequent access points on the radio network, operations can make strategic decisions as to which part of the RAN to optimize as a priority.

Radio optimization teams can focus for instance their efforts on

  • major subscribers such as VIPs, corporate fleets, etc.
  • targeted areas like QoE of a corporate fleet in a specific building, QoE of subscribers in trains, optimization of a business center or a special event, etc.
  • key services like VoLTE, video streaming, etc.

Evaluate new features & technologies

Any new RAN release brings its share of new functionalities or technologies that RAN engineering teams need to evaluate and for which they need to define new engineering rules and CM configuration. This requires to test the network prior to commercial deployment in order to understand network behavior and measure the potential impact on both resource usage and quality of experience. RAN engineers therefore need multi-techno and multi-vendor tools that are constantly updated to support those new features, as well as strong investigation capabilities at call level to analyze signalling activity. Finally they need to monitor the impact of any feature activation through trending KPIs.

Measure device performance

New technologies bring new handsets, new applications and new challenges for the network. The smartphone market has a continuous pressure of launching new models, features and operating system versions – often brought to market in a rush, without being properly tested. Radio optimization teams need network analytics pinpointing low performing devices that are for instance preventing subscribers from accessing data services and hence creating a bad customer experience. KPIs per handset allow to select the best performing handsets on the network.
